Pirates are in the news these days. Although modern pirates have exchanged their picturesque sailing vessels for high-octane motorboats, swashbuckling swords for frighteningly efficient assault weapons, the damask waistcoat for amphibious attack-friendly scuba gear and treasure maps for advanced global positioning tracking devices, the non-pirate’s uneasy fascination with these paradoxically romantic characters remains robust as ever. How much do you know about the pirates of yore?
A substantial portion of the material in the quiz comes courtesy of David Cordingly’s Under the Black Flag, which is a quick, yet captivating, read separating the glamorous myth about pirates from the grotesque reality. Heave to, drop sail and weigh anchor me hearties…a pirate quiz it be.
Brett — Great quiz. But what jackass came up with the title?
Oh, that’s right. That was me. (Sorry.) Way to work it into the quiz, though.

Isn’t “Hispaniola” still the name of the island, while [the answer] is the name of the republic located on the western half of the island?

I was going to say the same thing; Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola. Do a google map search with just ‘hispaniola’ and it’ll pop you right there.
