I’ve always been fascinated with the psychology of twins and their relationships. Today’s Brain Game is a “related” riddle (pun intended) that we hope you’ll enjoy:

Jon and Don were born to the same parents
on the same date of the same year
at the same hospital, but they’re not twins.

How is this possible?

  1. I was thinking that their parents were lesbian partners, who both got pregnant and who happened to deliver simultaneously. I guess I over-thought that one.

  2. Dag nab it, I guessed they were quadruplets.

  3. Not only did I guess the triplets angle, I even went with Ron for the third!

  4. Finally, I know one… then I see Kevin got it. Booo.

  5. But what if they were born nine months apart on the same date (say the 15th) of the same year, but different months? Many a mother who thought breast feeding would protect her from getting pregnant and found out nine months later that it didn’t, can vouch for this one. Not to single out any nationality, or belittle anyone, but I believe they used to call this Irish Twins.

  6. Amy, I was going with the lesbians angle, too… looks like we both need to brush up on our Occam’s Razor…

  7. Hmmm. I was thinking that Jon and Don might be houseflies, two of hundreds of baby houseflies born that day. Which wouldn’t speak well of the hospital, now, would it? (And why would they even have names in the first place?)

  8. I missed the 3rd one’s name…thought it might be Susy…

  9. “‘Chesnut! Chesnut!’ he said, gnashing his teeth … ”

I think I got the Hobbit quote right. Anyway: They’re two of a set of triplets (or other multiple birth larger than twins).

  10. finally, an easy one.

  11. My guess was that this was based on the whole “man gets pregnant” news story, and that both the man and the woman were pregnant. Occam’s Razor in action!

  12. I said they were cousins, the same parents were their grandparents….
