My parents have a running joke about this. My mom will say, “Well, yes, we did that,” or, “You remember, we were there…”. And my dad has no memory of the event or story in question. So, my dad will say that she did it with “Charles”. Her imaginary husband. This happens a lot with movies that my parents have supposedly seen together. So my mother has been having an “affair” with “Charles” for years.
It’s entertaining to watch.

I’ve lived this, as most married people have. The only difference is that my husband would SWEAR UP AND DOWN that he was, in fact, there.

It’s not just married people — I was once listening to a friend tell me a story I’d heard a couple of times before, and I said ‘I know! I was there.’

And she looked at me oddly and said ‘No, you weren’t, that was when I was in New York with Jenn.’

And she was right. But I could picture it so clearly in my mind. I’m still not entirely certain I wasn’t there.
