As an expert marksman (he had killed 26 in duels before he met his match), Jackson’s political opponents had Dickinson insult Jackson’s wife so the notoriously hot-headed Jackson would challenge him to a duel, and, presumably, lose.

This is why we don't use dangling modifiers! I couldn't tell at first (until I googled "Charles Dickinson") whether it was Dickinson, Jackson, or "Jackson's political opponents" who had 26 kills prior to this duel. Obviously the last one made the least sense, but grammatically that phrase is the subject of the sentence.

Let us not forget the most famous duel in San Francisco, between David Broderick, (0-1), former US Senator, and David Terry, (1-0), former CA Supreme Court Justice, September 13, 1859. There is a marker commemorating the event on the edge of Lake Merced.

9. "All of this because he called von Holstein a cheater at gambling." - Which was probably true considering the cowardly way he fought his duel.

I am in the midst of reading a biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Hamilton arrived in what became the US midway through his teens, and Aaron Burr was one of the first people he met. Their rivalry started almost immediately, though at times it cooled to the point that they were sociable. In many, many ways Hamilton and Burr were polar opposites: Hamilton an extrovert, Burr fairly reclusive, Hamilton eloquent and verbose, Burr concise and succinct. It's an amazing story, with plenty of sex, drugs, and violence along the way. The most surprising thing about Hamilton's biography is that they have not made a movie of his life (yet).
