But if the inscription on the James Ossuary is a fake, then it has no real value. Many such ossuaries exist from that time, and the only thing that made this one special was the inscription. It's like finding a bat signed by Babe Ruth, then learning the signature was forged. It's still a bat, but it's still fake, too.

Not archeological, but my art history professor proved that the Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield, MA had a fake Jericho painting. They wouldn't believe her and kicked her out of the museum. This was while she was getting her PhD in art history at UMASS, and the university threatened to pull their funding for the museum if they didn't let her back in. She ended up writing a dissertation and delivering it at Harvard.

The most frightening thing about Piltdown Man is that it proves, not that there is a missing link between humans and apes, but that orangutans eat people!

I don't suppose that it was an "archaeological find" but the Greek horse that was displayed for many years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art before it was determined to be a fake deserves a mention.

How about doing something on the archaeological finds that we still aren't quite sure about, like the Kensington Runestone, the Shroud of Turin, or some of the paleoliths of the American Southwest?

It appears that the jury is still out on the authenticity of the James Ossuary. The inscription may be, but has not been proven to be, a forgery.

The second of the listing, "The “oldest” star map" might mean The Nebra Sky Disk. It was now generally considered as authentic stuff.

See information about this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebra_sky_disk

Do you have any sources for your de-bunking? I remember the James Ossuary being all over the news but had yet to hear of it being a forgery except from the "it couldn't possibly be true" crowd. I'm not doubting your veracity, but I'm heading out to the google right now to see what I can see.

I've actually seen the Cardiff Giant (the real one... the original fake one? Whatever). It's under this glassed-in box out on the lawn of the historical recreation town in Cooperstown, NY.
