...I think everyone's getting a little too riled up about the milk. How about the fact that the engine of one of these cars alone cost $17k to build, which I'm sure could be put to better use. Or the insane amount of pollution they cause? Forest for the trees, people.

Sadly lactose intolerance will prevent me from ever winning the Indy 500. And other things too I guess.

Ah, for those of us who practically live within spittin' distance of the track, it's a huge hassle. And I have to admit I learned a thing or two from this article...I don't really pay attention to racing.

But it is kinda cool to see my hometown talked about here. :)

Wow. Half the world is starving or dying of thirst or suffering losses in an earthwuake, and what do we do in America to celebrate winning a car race? We chug milk. What a waste. Great example being set for the rest of the world.

What a serious waste of milk if that old tradition or superstitious kinda thing is still followed. It doesn't make any sense to me just because Meyer’s mom had told him to drink buttermilk on warm days to cool down and a photographer snapped a picture when he took a long slug of milk in victory lane after winning the 1936 race and we waste it like that in the picture especially in the economic uncertainty situation like now. I'd be more happy to donate those wasted milk to Myanmar and China where there are more people in desperate need with basic necessities than to see those being poured out on the driver's head.

What, nothing on the Snake Pit? If you want to talk about Indy 500 traditions, you need to talk about the Snake Pit.
I must admit that the police have all but killed it - but when I was younger, it was a wild place to be during the race.

I have grown up going to the Indy 500 with my Dad. I know racing doesn't seem all that exciting but if you ever have the opportunity to go, you must! It is the most amazing event, people everywhere, lots of celebrity's (last time I went I got within 5ft. of Jim Neighbors and 10ft. of Mohammed Ali), and best of all, loud, fast cars.

My Dad turns in his ticket order the day after the race for the next year, otherwise you will get bumped out of your good seats.

I believe I have my facts here right (if we are to trust Uncle John's Bathroom Reader)... In 1964, Americans got their first look at the Ford Mustang when it was the pace car at the Indy 500. People actually scaled the walls down to the track to get a better look and the race had to be held up until the fans could be cleared off the track.
(The only supporting evidence of this fact I can find is that a Mustang was the 1964 pace car).
