My dad raises cattle (hobby) and we had this german shepherd named Duke who came to us when a neighbor died. The dog had been spending a lot of time at our house anyway since there were kids, and he just stayed after that.

Duke was leery of cattle and would not go anywhere near them, which is good for a dog on a cattle farm. One day I was in the yard with him and his head snapped up and he took off at a dead run and jumped OVER a 5 foot wooden fence. A bull was trying to sneak up on my dad who had his back turned. Duke charged the bull and bit him on the nose. He got kicked pretty good, but he saved dad's life. No doubt about it. That dog has been gone more than 20 years now and I still have his picture on the wall at my house. I have had a lot of dogs before and since, but that one was special.

Another well known one is Greyfriars Bobby in Edinburgh. There is a book and a movie based on his story, but it's essentially similar to Hachiko's story. Little Sky Terrier so devoted to his master that when his master died, he refused to leave the cemetery. Click on my name to link to Bobby's official web site.

The Jack Russell that died protecting his masters (five children) from pit bulls in New Zealand so touched one USA soldier that he gave his Purple Heart medal to the dead dog. Makes me, an Iraq/ Afganistan veteran, cry every time. Thank goodness for Jack Russells.

Where is Gelert?...a town in Wales is named after his grave "Beddgelert" after a prince rushed judgment on the situation thinking all the blood near his infant son's cradle and and his missing heir was the cause of Gelert and instantly slew him...to only find out in his Gelert's, meaning "Faithful Hound" Welsh, last wimper was the cry of his infant son hidden under the debris of the proceeding fight that Gelert had had with what was now a slain carcus of huge wolf. Gelert had actually protected his son...to be paid in death...so mornful was the prince that he was said to have never smiled again.

Or how about Argos, Odysseus' faithful hound who waited over 20 years for him to return from the Trojan war who was the first and only person to recognize him disguised as an old beggar...& depending on which translation you read died shortly thereafter his return either of the joy of finally having seen his master again or by Odysseus' begrudging own hands as he couldn't afford to have his cover blown...

Whether 100% true their stories have taken on the rank of myth and by far are much older than any here thus belong on this page...if you truly had to list all the acts of courage performed by dogs for humans you might need more bandwidth...valiant and loyal animals all.
