I missed the last one! I’ve never been to a spelling bee though. I credit my spelling ability to 3 years of much enjoyed Latin and a love of looking words up in the dictionary.

6/10 (I haven’t picked up my paideia in forever)
In eighth grade I missed Garibaldi. I pretty much freaked out at the mention that it was an Italian name. I came in twentieth. Considering it was out of 240 students from across the state, I feel I did pretty well.

I also went to regionals in sixth grade, coming in tenth. I missed mensal.

I won the school spelling bees in both 5th and 6th grades, but bombed at the second level, the county bees. Got as far as about 6th/7th place in them, respectively, but bombed out on “interaction” in 5th grade (”E-n-t-e-r-”? What was I thinking!?) and some word that I’d never heard of and to this day cannot remember in 6th grade. On the bright side, even my school’s spelling bee coach had never heard of it. But “interaction” will haunt me for the rest of my life.

8/10. Missed prospicience and appoggiatura on this quiz.
I was fortunate enough to be able to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 1994. Unfortunately, I only made it to the 2nd round where I missed “sauerbraten”.

Eighth grade. I won the school spelling bee, and I was at the district finals.
I broke my foot that day, but I didn’t go to the doctors, so I could barely walk, and, and is turns out, think.

Regency.

I mean, come on. My mind went blank – I couldn’t even think of what the word was, or what it meant. Worst moment of my life. And then I had to sit down, and the next word was like, waterfall or something.

10/10. I surprised myself.

I’d say this makes up for misspelling “Mediterranean” in a middle school spelling bee. I thought I was going to win, and to this day I feel like I was cheated – when I finished, I was convinced that I spelled it right. But when the bell dings, you have to sit down.

Thankfully I never had the urge to become a competitive speller. Now I just try to spell everything correctly when I type, to beat the red underline.
