Everyone knows Adam Sandler can hold his own as a musician. From Opera Man on SNL to The Wedding Singer , the comedian has serious vocal chops, isn’t half bad on the guitar, and can pen a catchy tune to boot. Most of you probably know his hilarious “Chanukah Song” (and maybe even The Office parody of it: “The Diwali Song”), but I know you’ve never heard him sing in Hebrew, because the following excerpt is a _floss exclusive. That’s right, we’ve got an advance copy of Sandler singing “Hine Ma Tov” (from Psalm 133: Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in peace) along with 5 other great performances by well-known artists who got together to participate on a new album called The Jewish Songbook.
The brainchild of legendary music producer Brooks Arthur (”My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Hang On Sloopy,” “Chapel of Love,” “Brown-Eyed Girl”), the album brings together some of the biggest names in the biz for the first time ever. And the best part about it: most of the proceeds go to charity. So check out the clips below and if you like ‘em, you can pick up a copy over at Shout! Factory.
The album will be released tomorrow, but remember: you heard ‘em on mental_floss first… and be sure to check back tomorrow for a chance to win a free copy.
1. “Hine Ma Tov” sung by Adam Sandler
2. “Shake Hands With Your Uncle Max” sung by Jason Alexander

4. “Bagel & Lox” sung by Rob Schneider
5. “Joe and Paul” sung by Paul Shaffer and Richard Belzer
6. “Utt Da Zay” sung by Manhattan Transfer
Rob Schneider is surprisingly good. :) These songs are all great.

Adam Sandler sang like a dream. Maybe he is ‘human’ afterall.

Actually, I was surprised – in a good way – by both Sandler and Schneider.

Adam Sandler is classic, though he tends to do his best work when he stays casual, not trying too hard to be funny or deep, etc.

I’ve always liked the tune of Hine Ma Tov. Good to know he sings it the same way I do! (you’d be surprised how melodies change from synagogue to synagogue)
