We rented a car for our recent trip down south. (We saved nearly enough in fuel to pay for the rental, but that’s a different post.) Our car did have XM satellite radio, which we enjoyed. Naturally, Kara kept things tuned to the 1970s station. While we didn’t hear “Disco Duck” or even “Convoy” along the way, we did manage to hear Neil Diamond belt out the live version of “Cherry, Cherry” four or five times. It got so stuck in my head, in fact, that this quiz was bound to happen sooner or later. So grab a fruit cocktail and see how you do:

Take the quiz: Cherry, Cherry

  1. 70% - not so bad

  2. Yah! 40%!

Uh.. how do you save gas money with a rental car? Don’t you have to pay for the gas you use? Or did you get a sweet deal where they waive that, or something? (Or maybe the rental used up less gas than your own car would have.)

  3. 60%. Might have been 70% if I wasn’t such a hockey fan that I assumed the Don Cherry in question was Grapes.

  4. Your last thought nailed it, Dan. We were driving a 2500-mile trip (Michigan through Alabama to Florida then Georgia then back). By renting a smaller car that got much better MPG than our minivan, we saved nearly enough in gas costs to pay the rental fees. (And, as an added benefit, those 2500 miles went on a rental vehicle instead of my own. The rental deal was for unlimited miles, so that was okay.)

The gent who helped us at the rental agency said he’s been seeing a lot more of that over the last year or so.

  5. Neat, Jack. My wife Kara did the same when I offered that question to the quiz. And there’s a third Don Cherry, too, who had pop hits with a few different orchestras back in the 1940s and 50s.

  6. And that occurred to me at the last minute. NOW it made sense, I thought.

  7. Can’t believe I got 70%! I guessed on most of them…

  8. 8/10. Would have been 9 if I hadn’t clicked on When Doves Cry too quickly. I knew that wasn’t it since it’s in Purple Rain.
