Correction @Texas Pride:

Texas was annexed into the United States of America.

And the deed was done by President Polk, not Tyler.

Here's the short version of the story:

In 1843, President Tyler negotiated a treaty of annexation with the Republic of Texas. Tyler sent the treaty to the U.S. Senate for ratification.

But it failed to pass. The Texas Treaty was defeated on June 8, 1844, by a vote of 35-16, below the two-thirds majority required by the Constitution.

James K. Polk was elected president later in 1844 on a platform of bringing Texas into the Union.

Tyler realized after the election that public opinion favored annexation of Texas, which would give him leverage with Congress if he tried again.

A new plan put together by Polk and begun by Tyler sought annexation of Texas by means of a joint resolution of Congress.

A joint resolution of Congress is an action which requires only a simple majority of both the House and the Senate.

A joint resolution is not a treaty.

On February 26, 1845, less than a week before Polk took the presidential oath of office, Congress passed the joint resolution.

The resolution made Texas a state if Texas' legislature approved.

In July 1845, the Texas Congress did that.

Polk completed the annexation process by signing the Texas annexation order on Dec. 29, 1845.

I must say that this is on par with the tabloid press, or gutter press as it is often referred to. I am most vexed by the attacks on Henry Wallace, which are completely unsubstantiated claims taken from slanders put out against this great thinker, scientist and true american. For more on this great guy, read:

Very interesting article- I had no idea we had such crazy VPs.

One mistake though: Section 6 states that John Tyler "annexed the Republic of Texas" but this is not true. Texas was an independent nation and so is the only state to enter the United States under a TREATY, and not annexation.

Great article! Some VPs are craaaazy. I'm related to John Nance Garner (something silly like 5th cousins, 8 times removed), FDR's first VP. I know little about him except he was a "mean whisky-drinking Texas politician" and, in high school, he was quoted in my government textbook as saying, "The vice presidency isn't worth a warm jar of spit." Later, I learned through Wikipedia that he actually said "piss", not "spit".

AndrewJohnson was impeached for violating the Tenureof Office Act. This was a law that was passed by the Radical Republican Congress that forbade the President from Dismissing any member of The Cabinet. Johnson, rightly so, declared the law unconstitutional, and fired E.M. Stanton, the Secretary of War who had been appointed by Lincoln as who was a darling of the Radicals.
It has been reported in many areas, including a story in J.F. K.'s Profiles in Courage, that the margin that kept Johnson from being convicted after his impeachment of one vote was made more to uphold the Office of The President of the United States than anything else

I'd like to think that after he leaves office, Cheney might be included. He can join Burr on the short list of VPs that have shot somebody while in the office.

I wouldn't think of TR as scandalous. He never came close to a scandal. Now Cheney? Maybe he'll be added to the list some day.
