“Numbers, numbers everywhere, but not a kid to think!” That’s what my algebra teacher used to say. Of course, she was about 200 years old. I think she taught my parents, too, if they had algebra back then. Anyway, speaking of numbers…
What’s the next number in this sequence?
8, 5, 4, 9, 1, 7, …
6 – they’re arranged alphabetically

Michael, you had me up until the -1. The -1 really furrows my brow. >:)

Michael’s right. I can work out a 24-degree polynomial equation that generates exactly that sequence of numbers.

Funny that I decided to read a number sequence brain teaser today. Just this morning I got this one from my lil bro.
Start with this:
1
11
21
1211
111221
312211
13112221
Now find the next line of numbers. Once you figure it out, you can find any number of lines after this.

I got the right answer, six, but apparently for the wrong reason: since the word “digit” was in the title, I thought it was the digits from zero to nine in alphabetical order. Thank goodness I didn’t think it was zero to twenty, or I would have gotten the answer wrong.

Fifteen. It’s Paris Hilton trying to count down from 10.
