Guitar Lessons? Anyone? Anyone? [UPDATE!]
by David K. Israel - September 26, 2008 - 4:18 PM

We asked, you commented, we listened.

Tune in this coming Monday for the first in a series of mental_floss guitar lessons. First episode: Buying Your First Axe. Thanks for speaking up! See you Monday.

chords.jpgI’m considering a video feature with a weekly guitar lesson for beginners. By that, I mean I’d be showing the real beginner a thing or two each week in a 2-3 minute video. Starting with the presumption that you’ve never even held a guitar in your hand and moving slowly through different chords and techniques, I’d take the lessons as far as I can, so long as people are watching them.
But I’m only going to attempt this if there’s real interest out there. And by real, I guess I mean 100 or so weekly viewers, if not more. So, by a show of comments, anyone think they’d actually get into something like this? For those who like to read the blog but never comment, and we know that’s most of you, now’s the time to speak and be counted.

Comments (229)
  1. I’ve been playing guitar for a couple years (self-taught), and I’m an avid mental floss reader. I’d definitely watch these videos; you never know when you’re going to pick up something new, even if it’s a beginner lesson!

  2. I would LOVE something like this, and would definitely participate.

  3. I would highly appreciate that

  4. Oh my goodness, I hope this goes through! I love guitar and had one as a kid, but have no idea how to play. I’ll totally read/watch it if you post it.

ReCAPTCHA: is ‘Bert MacMullen’ a real person?

  5. I would like it

  6. This would be awesome! My daughter(11) has been wanting to learn for about a year but I have her in Kung Fu and can’t afford to do both. This would be perfect…we can both learn at the same time!

  7. Yes, Yes, Yes, please?

  8. Would be appreciated!

  9. i also hope this goes through. I would actually do this every week. Please do this!!!!

  10. I’m down :D

  11. absolutely, go for it

  12. I would but my guitar is broken.
    :(
I would totally watch them once I get a new guitar!
    I SWEAR!
Just please make them dyslexic friendly, smart start guitar is not at allll dyslexic friendly, that is how I ended up learning the strings backwards. :/

  13. yeahhhhhhhh do it!

  14. yes please?

  15. Yes, I would love that. I play the cello but I’m looking to learn something more contemporary. Currently all I can do is play the intro to “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica ha ha.

  16. Count me in.

  17. I’m also interested ..

  18. Absolutely. yes.

  19. Totally in.

  20. I would definitely use these lessons. I play the cello but I want to learn something more contemporary.

  21. Very interested.

  22. Yes please.

  23. I’m interested! Whenever people try to teach me guitar, it always sounds like, “Okay, pick a song. Now… play the song.”

    o_o

  24. I know how to play guitar, but I’ve been looking for something to encourage my niece. So count this as a “Yes, please!”

  25. Great idea! I’m in.

  26. Count me in, my Strat would be so happy if I could give it some more chords to play!

  27. I’m in.

  28. /me raises hand to be included.

  29. I’m in, do it! I’ll be watching.

  30. OOOh! Me! Me! Me! I’ve had a guitar for years, but I just have not figured out how to play it. Well, I got a slow version of “Classical Gas” down once, but that was it. So, please!

  31. Please! I have three in my home that will follow religiously. So count this post as 3 affirmatives.

  32. yes please! that would be amazing :)

  33. It would be interesting to see what I taught myself wrong. :)

  34. Yes.

  35. ppppppppplease!

  36. I would definitely be interested! :)

  37. Yes please!

  38. Yes! I would love guitar lessons!

  39. I’ve known several teachers who use guitars to great effect in their classrooms, and have been looking into doing the same myself. I’d dig these for sure.

  40. Sounds like fun.

  41. Definately would be cool!

  42. Sounds like a good idea!

Maybe to keep a range of readers’ interest, you could do a beginner lesson and an advanced lesson within the same lesson. That way advanced players won’t have to wait for 216 episodes before it applies to them.

Or at least clearly state what you’re covering in your video title or description so that in the future advanced players can skip right to the good stuff.

  43. I’ve been playing guitar for a few years, but I would definitely check those videos out.

  44. Count me in!!

  45. I’d watch. May even try to find a cheap guitar and learn along. :)

  46. Please do! My husband could finally get some lessons in between work, commute, and our busy lives.

    Muchas Gracias!

  47. 100% yes. Great timing too — I’m about to start learning how to play guitar.

  48. Absolutely would LOVE that!

  49. Yeah, I’d love it!

  50. Very interested!

  51. Yes! Yes! Yes! I have been wanting to learn how to play guitar for a while now, but don’t really have the time for formal lessons. This would be perfect. I can’t wait!

  52. I was given a pretty nice guitar a few years ago, and have picked it up to learn a couple of times now. About time to try again. I’m in.

  53. This is a great idea. I’m looking forward to seeing your videos and hopefully learning something.

  54. I am very interested in online lessons! I can finally learn how to play the guitar that’s collecting dust in the corner of the room :-)

  55. This would be great! It’s tough to figure out exactly where to start with a guitar.

  56. Do it!

  57. I would love this.

  58. That does sound cool.

  59. YES PLEASE!

Just fifteen minutes ago, I was telling someone I really wanted to learn to play guitar.

  60. This would be an excellent Idea.

  61. I have really been wanting to take up guitar, but can’t afford lessons, and would love something like this to help me get started and over the hump. Please do this!

  62. absolutely, this is exactly what I want!

  63. In honesty you could show a weekly clip of paint drying and I would probably read it! I think I read every article, so why not that.

  64. sounds neat. :)
i don’t play, but maybe i could pick up MORE cool things to show off at parties.

  65. Let’s say our RSS feeders limited us to subscribe to only 10 feeds. I would subscribe to yours first due to the depth and variety of information that I receive here. This offering is a welcome and exciting surprise as I have been wanting to learn acoustic guitar and had been thinking about taking lessons. I know that if you decide to offer these lessons that you will do so with the excellence that you have always provided. I send links to your blog posts often to my friends and email acquaintances. Thank you for all you have given so far, and thank you even if you don’t decide to offer these lessons.

  66. my daughter and I were just sitting down to teach ourselves to play–we would love some help!

  67. I have a guitar sitting in the corner collecting dust…I’d definitely like some pointers to help me get back into it!

  68. That would be great!

  69. dig it toatally!!! yes
could their be base lessons once guitar lessons are finished?

  70. I’d absolutely love something like that.

  71. Count me in…

  72. I could go for some.

  73. Yay! I’ll do it- and my bf, so that’s two votes! :D

  74. Totally cool idea. I can play a bunch of different woodwinds, but I’ve always wanted to learn guitar. Would it be possible to also make it available as a podcast? If not, that’s cool. But it would be very cool if it were more portable than my laptop. :-)

  75. I’d do it.

  76. for sure! I’d love it!

  77. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

  78. Yes! Very yes!

  79. i would watch.

  80. If you’re going to make me comment the a big yes, I’ve always wanted lessons but have been to cheap/busy. Excuses.

  81. i’d definitely watch. i just recently purchased a guitar and was all excited about it until i realized i had to take lessons. i’ve seen some online, but i’d definitely be interested.

  82. That would be amazing!

  83. Mos def. And even if your audience is smaller than you’d like while you’re recording the lessons, people will keep discovering them over time. And that will be awesome.

  84. definitely interested

  85. Oh yeah. I’d definitely watch this.

  86. Oh yeah. These would definitely be appreciated!

  87. Totally all over it. I’ve wanted to learn for quite awhile now, and this will even give me an excuse to go and pick up a guitar.

  88. I’m game.

  89. Do it!!!

  90. I would be most grateful. I could use some pointers while getting started.

  91. yes!!!1

  92. A marvelous notion! Please see it through to fruition.

  93. Yes, please!!!

  94. I recently tried to learn on my nephew’s Fender, and got frustrated that I couldn’t quite get the D7 chord, the 2nd chord in the training video. I would welcome a different teaching style. YES!

  95. you betcha!

  96. This would be awesome. I would definitely be an avid viewer.

  97. I would one to watch the videos. This would be a great addition to mental floss!!

  98. do… re… ME!!!!

    =0)

  99. Since everyone I know is getting tired of hearing the bass line to “Smoke on the Water”, I think I could really use something like this!

  100. I’m down with it!

  101. Sounds like a great idea

  102. oh man…this was actually one of my goals to have done before college. i give it a thumbs up!

  103. I’d watch it for sure.

  104. Would love to, need to buy a guitar. Can you do a post a month or two ahead of video lessons on purchasing a guitar? I would do this for sure!

  105. I’d like to see this!

  106. Sounds great!!

  107. If you post em, I’ll watch em. I have a guitar but no one to teach me, and I don’t have the time or money for real lessons. I’m looking forward to them!

  108. I’d totally watch.

  109. Yes! Totally would do it!

  110. I’ve got a guitar laying around here that could use a little work! I hope you cover tuning the thing first. It’s been sitting around for decades…

  111. oh yes. just what i’ve been needing.

  112. Yes, interested!

  113. I used to play but quit after I broke my neck about 12 years ago… been thinking about starting again so this would be a nice refresher..

  114. I am SO DOWN!

  115. I’m so down!!

  116. *Raises her hand and stands on her tiptoes and jumps up and down*

Me me me me!!! I took a guitar class in high school and retained some of the most basic stuff, but I want to get back into it.

    Por favor?
    Muchas gracias

  117. i’ll follow it

  118. please do!

  119. Yes, please!

  120. Yes! Definitely! I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, but I’m too poor for lessons and too self-conscious to self-teach.I haven’t been exposed to chords and progressions since nigh school orchestra so this would be an interesting refresher. I’m all in!

  121. that would be awesome… please do!!

  122. yes yes!!! where do i sing ?

  123. While I don’t have a geetar yet it’s one of those things I plan to do. So while I may not follow the lessons now it could help me (and numerous other people) in the future.

  124. This would be great! I’ve been looking for something exactly like this. I’ve got a Tele I can’t play a chord on.

  125. sign me up!

  126. definatly would be interested!!

  127. well you finally got me to start commenting on this website that I read on daily basis. consider me interested

  128. I would totally watch guitar lessons here

  129. Wow, you’ve inspired me to de-lurk!
I’ve been toying with the idea of taking up the guitar for some time, but was too intimidated by the musical talent of my friends to ask for help. I would love to secretly learn to play! XD

  130. Yes!

Hmm, my reCaptcha words are “Fail Quietly” – hopefully not in reference to the guitar-playing idea.

  131. You can count me in.

  132. do it! thanks. :)

  133. I will be watching your video.

  134. I’m not a beginner, myself, but I’ve got several friends who are always begging me for pointers would love an online tutorial. I’d happily point them in your direction.

  135. I have a guitar just collecting dust and would love to have the opportunity to do something with it other than just stare at it. Please do these videos.

  136. Pretty please…with a cherry on top?

My sister bought me a guitar about 2 years ago, and I’ve taught myself how to play somewhat, but I don’t really know what I’m doing. I mean, I can fake it, but I’m always looking for a hookup on free lessons and theory so that I can play for real.

  137. Yes — got a guitar — need help.
Also — would like some advice. Am pretty ambidextrous — but find it more comfortable holding the guitar lefty.
Should I restring… get another guitar or what?

  138. I’m in!

  139. I’m interested. But I’d be starting at the real beginning.

  140. this sounds great, count me in.

  141. i would absolutely love it! i’ve always wanted to learn how to play. now i just need a guitar…hmmm.

  142. I’d watch!

  143. i’m in!

  144. I think this is a great idea considering I’m still trying to learn myself!

  145. Count me in! I have a guitar and was going to start on my own. This is perfect timing!

  146. would love it!

  147. Heck yeah!

I was learning the guitar a while back and stopped after a year of progress. This would def. be something that can start me again!

  148. yes please! and start with how to buy a decent guitar?

  149. Hey y’all, count me in!!
I’ve started and stopped soooo many times, perhaps this time the lessons will stick! lol

  150. I’m down! I need a good way to learn the basics, and what better way than through one of my favorite blogs??

  151. Hey thanks guys! I think we have enough to give it a whirl. Check back in September for lesson #1: buying the right guitar for you. (or some such thing)

Don’t worry beginners, we’re starting at the very beginning!

And keep those ideas coming in the comments for what you’d like me to cover.

  152. I’m in!

  153. Oddly enough, my boyfriend got out his old dusty guitar this weekend to sell, but I asked him to keep it so I could try and learn online. What timing! Count me in.

  154. This is awesome. I’ve been playing for just a few months now, just learning on my own. I bought a simple chord book and spend half my time learning from that, and half just trying to “pick along” to some of my fave tunes. I’d love to see another approach.

Please remember to consider women with smaller hands in all aspects of the lessons. MORE CHIX need to be playing guitar, and as one with tiny little bird hands, I’ve had to modify or avoid some chords altogether. AND the only guitars I feel comfortable with are kiddie-sized acoustic and mini-flying-V.

I also started on a thrift store ukelele, which was a great intro to basic concepts.

  155. YES!
I Love playing guitar. I’ve been playing for 28 years and teach lessons on the weekends.
This is a good idea. Keep the guitar lessons coming!!!!!!

  156. Count me in!!!

  157. DO IT!!

  158. Yes please!

  159. Well, I’m not a real beginner – I’ve been self-learning guitar for about 3 years. But I’m with John – I’ll take a look, even if they’re beginner lessons.

Bbxx – I’m a woman with teeny little hands too – I have 2 Daisy Rock guitars (Stardust and Rock Candy) and they are a nice fit. And there are some good travel or 3/4 size out there too.
I know it’s cliche but it does get easier…And you will find you have more stretch and more strength as time goes on. A couple months ago I even added an acoustic Yamaha 12-string to my arsenal.
Still can’t quite get certain chords on any of them though!

  160. Sound clips/mp3s accompanying each picture so we (the students/readers) will know what a correctly played note should sound like would be a nice touch.

  161. Absolutely! My daughter and I would both be interested.

  162. This is a great idea! I look forward to it.

  163. Absolutely. Go for it!

  164. I’d be interested.

  165. yes please! anything to put me on a more regular schedule with picking mine up!

  166. I love Mental_Floss and I hope that efforts like this continue and are rewarded!

  167. I’ve been trying to self-teach myself the guitar so these extra lessons would be excellent! :)

  168. I’m in.

  169. Sound good to me!

On a completely unrelated matter, don’t you hate it when the reCaptcha gives you made-up words?

  170. Yes please!

  171. Just in case you don’t have 100 yet…yes, yes, yes…please. :-)

  172. Hey this sure beats Guitar Hero, eh.

  173. This would be perfect!

  174. It’d be a lot cooler if you did, man.

  175. I’d love to see this and I’d definatley tune in every week!

  176. Oh, now I wish I hadn’t sold the guitar I never bothered to learn to play!

Perhaps I can lay my hands on a new one-I’m sooooo IN!

  177. count me in.

  178. I would watch. (I took lessons for about a year about two years ago, so I’d love to brush up.)

  179. Yes, please!

  180. I would definitely watch! I’ve been trying to learn guitar for a year, and I still feel like a beginner. I know it would help me.

  181. definitely. sound awesome

  182. Great idea! Please do!

  183. Wow 182 comments!

Without reading thru them all, just wanted to suggest the series be called “Anyone Can Play Guitar” in honor of flossy band, Radiohead.

  184. I would definitely watch!

  185. Yes i would be interested!

  186. YES!

  187. Its a very good idea! I also want to learn how to play a guitar.

  188. Sounds like a great idea!

  189. Looks like 100 plus…. My 12 year old has been interested in learning guitar for awhile now…

  190. Yes, please!

  191. I’m in. I bought a guitar because it was pretty and I have no idea how to play it.

  192. I would be very interested in these lessons as my husband is a professional guitar player and I’ve always wanted to pick up a few things. However, I’m not big on internet video, so I’d like it if you could transcribe it for those of us who’d prefer to read about it.

  193. yes have wanted to learn to play the damn think since i bought it. never watch qvc while drinking…

  194. Pretty please with sugar on top.

  195. Guitar + Mental_floss= SMILE

  196. just got a guitar from a friend, but am having trouble catching on. would definitely be interested in this

  197. I have 3 boys who would love to do that! They bought a guitar with their own money, but their cousin who plays (he’s 28) won’t even show them the cords. I’ll finish reading all the articles later and am handing the computer to the boys now (I’m scared!)

  198. This is an excellent idea!

    recaptcha: frequent depicting

  199. I think I’m 199 or 200. It’s a great idea. My son & I are looking forward to it.

  200. Yes!!! I’m in.

  201. YES YES YES

  202. yeah!

  203. Most defiantly yes!

  204. For those who like to read the blog but never comment, —- thats me!

    And i’m in!

  205. That would be great.

  206. I would DEFINITELY watch these! Please go forward and do this, please! Thanks!

  207. Let’s do it!

  208. Count me in as interested. My husband was a professional player and left us with some very expensive guitars no one can play. My youngest is taking a weekly guitar lesson, and I’d like to learn enough to help her along.

  209. I’d love to learn

  210. Yes! Thank you, thank you!

(Isn’t it strange that my ReCaptcha is “yes review”?)

  211. Sounds cool to me

    Recaptcha – “weeds $175,000,000″
    sounds like a wild weekend…

  212. I’d definitely be interested. Not so much in the first few, per se, but once the lessons got rolling past holding a guitar and basic chords I’d watch religiously.

    Thanks!

  213. sure i’ll do it!

  214. yes please. I’d love to learn the guitar.

  215. Absolutely! I’ve had a guitar sitting under my bed for years now and still can’t play it.

  216. I’m interested :)

  217. It would interesting. Any chance you could have a beginner’s lesson and maybe sprinkle in something more advanced as well?

  218. definitely interested. i’ve been looking to play for a long time.

  219. Absolutely! Video is a great teaching method for guitar.
    Some Blues please.
    :)

  220. Great idea!

  221. I would like to suggest mp3s or soundbites of each chord so those with a guitar can try playing the chord then listen to hear if they’re playing it correctly.

My recaptcha was Costello Board. Made me think of Elvis Costello

  222. Please do this!

  223. I would like it very much; I would watch it. I think the weekly time period is a good idea. People would have more time to practice on their own.

  224. I’m in, for sure! mental note: buy guitar.

  225. Hells yeah!!

  226. I bought a Guitar for my daughter after she begged me for one and lessons. Paid for 3 years worth of lessons. She now is no longer is interested. I have picked it up and am now trying to find the best site on the web to self teach guitar, which isn’t easy. If you can do this that would be awesome!

  227. I’ve been wanting to learn, but can’t afford lessons. I’d definitely be up for something like that.

  228. I would be very interested in a set of entries on this topic. I recently started learning guitar and would gladly accept any venue to gain insight.

  229. i’m down. i got a guitar for christmas like 3 years ago…i taught myself jingle bells a couple years ago but dont even remember how to play that.

and maybe if there was something to read, in addition to the video, that would be cool. my internet connection sucks at home and would have trouble with videos, but words i can def read! (but thats just me)

    loooooves the idea :)
