Greek Mythology is the way an ancient people attempted to understand the world. With a comparatively limited knowledge of natural science and theoretical physics, the Greeks would use stories to explain why things happened. The stories and myths they produced have had a lasting effect and profoundly influenced almost all branches of intellectual thought.

How much do you know about the archaic system of beliefs that helped transform the world creatively and intellectually?

Take the Quiz: Is It Greek To You?

  1. Oh man, I only got 4 out of 13. I got Bacchus right because I thought I remembered that being the character’s name on Stargate SG-1. Shame on me.

  2. 12 out of 13–Didn’t know about Hesiod.

  3. Grrr…six out of thirteen. I think that’s the first time I haven’t at least beaten the average. :(

  4. 2/13: Sorry, I work with numbers for a living, not “fake” history. Congrats to those who did well. Most of the questions and answers made me feel like I was reading another language.

  5. I about jumped out of my chair when I saw the subject of today’s quiz! One of my all time favorite subjects!
I missed 2, couldn’t quite remember what it was Sisyphus did (Now, Tantalus I could remember!). And the Aeneid really threw me! Thought for sure it was the Odyssey since the Iliad ends with the death of Hector and the Odyssey was the end of the Trojan war and what followed and I knew Odysseus was the one that invented the horse! Oh well…

  6. 9/13. Not bad for not having read any mythology in a while. Awesome quiz!

  7. 62%! (And I’m a numbers person!) Truthfully, I guessed on a few, and used my very weak knowledge of Latin on a couple as well.

  8. Wow, that was really hard. I was really channeling my high school classes there. Apparently, not much has retained in my brain.
