TRUE or FALSE: The Little Big Horn was the worst defeat suffered by the U.S. Army at the hands of Indians.

FALSE! Back in 1791, a confederation of tribes under the Shawnee Blue Jacket and the Miami Little Turtle decimated most of America’s standing army: General Arthur St. Clair took 1400 troops with him to “pacify” Ohio tribes; our elders say he was allowed to go home with 600. (About 600 were killed, 250 wounded.)

A pet peeve of this Shawnee descendent-all the talk of the Little Big Horn overshadowing the warfare over the frontier that once existed east of the Mississippi River!

The only cavalry survivor of the battle is stuffed and standing on the top floor of the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas — Comanche, a horse who managed to get away.
