hmm, i’m female and i did it the male way. i think it’s because i chew my nails and it’s easier to chew them when my fingers are curled. i’m just used to curling my fingers to look at my nails?

I do it the “male” way, but I also bite my nails like crazy. For statistical purposes, I’m bi, but I don’t think it’s really relevant given how many straight women do it that way too.

hcat, how is a gay man a security risk to a nuclear power plant? I mean, I get the homophobia of the time period (as stupid and unfounded as it may be) but.. a security risk?

My mom did it the male way. She swears she’s straight, but she’s an Ellen Degeneres fan, and she was wearing her Rosie O’donnell t-shirt when I asked her to look at her nails.

My (very heterosexual) brother in law actually had an interviewer give him the nail test during a job interview for a nuclear power plant. Granted this was in the early 90s, but they were trying to determine if he was gay to see if he was a security risk.

He was sitting with his hands on his legs. The interviewer told him to look at his nails, so my brother just tilted up his hands, looked at his nails, and then shot a “that was stupid” look to the interviewer. The interviewer then went off on a rant about how he didn’t look at his nails “like a man” and how gays were security risks and couldn’t be hired.

My (6′5″) brother in law won that argument.

i figured this out without asking anyone, even though i check mine the “male” way. it might have to do with occasional nail biting, as aphiblazer pointed out above me.

I’m a straight female and I checked mine the “male” way, but I also bite my nails on a regular basis and you can’t do that by looking at them the “female” way. I’m also right handed but cut my food as if I was left handed…does that mean something?
