  1. Yeah, I have Atlas Shrugged sitting on my bookshelf (not a single crease in the spine) for #8. I think everyone who reads it should just automatically get $10,000. By the way, how young is a “young” nudist–can I still get that scholarship?

  2. “$10,000 from the Ayn Rand Institute for the best essay about the book.”

What is “the book?” Far as I know, Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead are only a few of “the book(s).” Maybe it’s an essay on the Bible.

  3. Can the essay be about what a pile of suck Ayn Rand and her stupid books are? Somehow, I doubt it. Responding well to criticism has never been the Objectivists’ strong suit.

    Flame away, Randians!

  4. Wow there is always so much hatred for Rand, I don’t think I’ll ever understand that.

I agree Ben, she’s written many books (”The anthem” also) so I’m wondering which book the scholarship alludes to

  5. I double-checked, and the Ayn Rand Institue scholarship award for college students is for an essay about Atlas Shrugged.

The full rules from the institute are available at the Ayn Rand Institute website.

  6. I am an Evans Scholar (#7). Its receipt has very little to do with how good a caddie any candidate is, and has nothing to do with winning the caddie tournament (although I do love Caddyshack). It’s also real tough to get, most of our class at the U of MN got 3.9-4.0 GPAs in High School.

  7. In regards to Rand, wouldn’t a scholarship be contradictory to the values of Objectivism?

  8. What about a scholarship for nude, twin, fat, left-handed, dwarf, Ayn Rand-hating masturbating caddies?

  9. Florida, if it were “needs-based” the Objectivists would have a problem with it. Since it is based on rewarding achievement which would presumably help advance the cause of Objectivism (value for value), it’s all good.

That said, the sheer volume self-indulgent pap that must come from a contest of high school seniors writing about Atlas Shrugged would be physically painful to read.

  10. I entered the Rand scholarship contest when I was in high school without any real knowledge of Objectivism… I just thought it was just a standard reader response/book report kind of a thing… Hm.

  11. When I was in high school the local tall club gave scholarships, but there was a minimum height to qualify. Haven’t all the studies show that short people (like me) are the ones at a disadvantage.

  12. Another Evans Scholar here - Go Miami! Part of the scholarship is living together like a fraternity. Nothing like living with a bunch of caddies!

  13. The only people who hate Rand are those who have never read her.

I dig these scholarships. If someone wants to award folks for comparatively unusual stuff, let ‘em. It’s their money.

  14. I got a $50 scholarship and a free dinner with the group from some auxiliary or Lion’s Club type organization for perfect attendance throughout highschool. I was just never absent for an entire school day. Half the cost of a textbook here I come!

  15. i got a $200 scholarship for having green eyes

  16. emma
