I am not a fan of Akon, but that one wasn’t entirely his fault. Sure, simulating sex on stage isn’t classy but as I recall that wasn’t Verizon’s reason for dumping him…it was all about it being with a 15-year-old. How was Akon suppose to know that?

Bringing it home to 2011, how about Gilbert Gotfried as the voice of AFLAC? I am sure they will never find anyone nearly as annoying, but the search is on.

One who has apparently done an excellent job: Mike Rowe, the “Dirty Jobs” guy, touting Ford Motor products. I like Mike, and I like Fords, but it seems like another doubletake alliance.

Those Lipitor ads really bothered me. I remember the first time I started seeing medical drugs commercialized. That was a really bad idea – and it still is!

Ye gods! Conspicuous by their absences are the following:

Clara Peller with her wildly memorable “Where’s the beef?!” for Wendy’s back in the 80s. She was fired for having found it in Prego’s pasta sauce.

David Leisure as “Joe Isuzu,” the very paragon of an oily salesman, for Isuzu Motors back in the 80s/90s. Binned for being more popular than the trucks and cars he was hawking.

My favorite was when Elvira was fired by Coors Beer for their Halloween ads. Coors stated that she did not fit the clean cut family image Coors was trying to portray as the good Christian folks thought she might look they were promoting the devil. A company that sells alcohol is worried about its image to the Christian community? If they were so worried maybe they should stop selling a product that actually kills people
