The magnitude of those storms is hard to fathom. The Worst Hard Time was a great book. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Here's another recommendation for The Worst Hard Times. It's a great book, and very informative.

I love history, and love reading these "little known facts" type of posts. Another huge event, that we didn't learn about in school (at all, really) was the influenza epidemic of 1918. Would love a "facts you might not know" article on it.

Fantastic post! My sixth graders are learning about the 1930s right now, and the Dust Bowl section in our text is only 4 very boring paragraphs. These will be some neat facts to share with them after spring break!

I think that many of us can track family members that were, either directly or indirectly, affected by the Dust Bowl era.

I had family on both sides... We were "Lucky" in the sense that my G-Grandfather worked for the railroads and even in the worst of times, they were the backbone of the nation.

I heard stories of people by the hundreds waiting outside the rail yards waiting for any possible jobs to open up. If word got out that someone had been injured or killed, it was a feeding frenzy for the open spot. Similar only to the Great Depression.

My dad tells stories of living in a "soddy" when the dust bowl hit Kansas. What an amazing and tragic period in history!

Just to let you know, Woody Guthrie had an entire album of songs about the dust bowl (entitled "Dust Bowl Ballads"). He also addresses many other social issues of the time as (quite possibly the first) topical folk singer.

The Oklahoma Panhandle has only 3 counties; Texas county, Beaver county and Cimmarron county. There were, however, many counties in Western Oklahoma that were affected by the dust bowl, but more than 3.

APUSH is Advanced PLacement United States History. It's a high school class, and one I did not personally enjoy. I did enjoy this article, though.

Great post! I just had to read about this for Apush and it was awfully boring, but your perspective and presentation was fascinating. See, you guys should be employed to re-write boring text books!
