January Jones's episode was very painful to watch, mostly because she seemed like such a nice person but was doing a terrible job. She laughed through so many sketches when there wasn't even something funny to laugh at. I think the Black-Eyed Peas were the musical guest that week, so that did nothing to help the show's quality...

January jones was horrid. Gary busey and Kris Kristoferson both hosted in the 70's, and both were hammered drunk, and it shows. The stones hosted in the 70's as well. They werent in many sketches, and they played like crap. They spent the whole week partying and were burnt out by sat night. The cast out did the greatest rock band of all time that night

Of course, Lasser's best-known role (As the title character in Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman) did little on the show but sit there and look "out-of-it" while the world went around her. Maybe she was going for that? I dunno.

Wow, how out of it was Louise Lasser? I mean SNL casts aren't exactly known for their clean living, particularly in the seventies!

Chevy Chase insulted Bill Murray? That's it, Chevy Chase is on my s*** list. Poor Jodie Foster, though. She was really trying to do her best, I'm sure, and at 14 any teen will be a giant ball of self-doubt and insecurity. I'd heard about Louise Lasser's ineptitude, fueled by her cocaine addiction at the time. Thanks for explaining it more.

I'd also heard about Nancy "fake crocodile tears" Kerrigan's SNL hosting disaster; good, it couldn't have happened to a "nicer" gal. (Team Tonya Harding all the way!) Though at least she was talented at something else; WTF were no-talents such as Paris Hilton and Ashlee Simpson doing as SNL hosts? How about if they just return to having people with real talent be hosts and musical guests? At least Uncle Miltie was getting up in years and made audiences laugh for decades before he started slipping.

Most of these are spot on. I'd say the worst performances are not the ones that obviously fall flat but rather where the host is so weirdo that the viewer has no idea if it's intentional or not. You're wondering if you're supposed to laugh or look deeper into it and it just comes off confusing.

The one host in this article I don't agree with is Jodie Foster. Her hosting/performance was NO where near what the article makes it out to be. I agree she lacked the direction needed to deliver the writing done for her skits that the article notes. However, only about half the skits contained her in them, some were worthy of note, and both her monologue and closing were totally fine. She came out, thanked the audience and cast, stammered slightly to fill a few seconds, brought the cast up, and then smilingly bowed out waving goodnight to the normal applause. It wasn't a great episode but I also accredit some of it to the audience who literally just seems dead that night even on notably funny bits. I'm not sure who or what episode the writer was referencing but it wasn't the Jodie Foster episode.

Thanks for the summary.

I just watched some of these notorious hosts on Netflix.

Louise Lasser was indeed painful to watch. Even if she was doing the Mary Hartman character, it did not work and was not funny at all.

I laughed out load many times at the Milton Berle show. Some of his jokes were politically incorrect, sexist, slightly racist perhaps, but unlike a lot of the other hosts, he had a seasoned comic's sense of delivery and timing. 30 years later, his humor has stood the test of time a lot better than many of the other hosts, especially with all their druggie humor, which Uncle Miltie didn't have to stoop to.

Jodie Foster was certainly nervous, but she didn't say just "Thank you" during the goodnights.
