He is a figure of influence in his party, just as Edwards is in his. If your best reasoning for him not being able to take part in a debate is that he is a frequent guest on a cable channel that you do not happen to like, then you might want to do some brushing up before entering *your* next debate...because that's not particularly logically sound. Anyway, even if he isn't actively seeking office, he definitely fits the definition of a politician (see your favorite dictionary for an explanation).
