Those ancedotes don't show that he was a great debator - just a great manipulator. Which, isn't actually a surprise. His tactics fit quite well with the current administration - instead of having a skill, he plays games of distraction. Not something to be proud of.

The only thing I want to know about Rove is that he's dead.
If I believed in the devil it'd be him.

slater also co-authored a book with james moore which mentions rove's debate career. an excerpt describing rove's debate background with a little more detail is available on the edebate list-serv, along with this some interesting reaction (apparently links arent allowed in comments here, but the archive is at ndtceda.com and the discussion is from March 2003 in the thread "Karl Rove's debate roots")

interestingly, it is now common for high school and college policy debaters to cart around 3 or more large plastic storage tubs on a dolly - although 8.5x11 paper has overtaken 3x5 cards.

I think he's just someone that can draw a crowd. Particularly, with his and Edwards' powers combined!

The Volkswagon convertible would also be a neat entrance trick. Maybe the convertible could pull the cart of cards, for double the intimidation. :)

@Jess
I was not aware that the right to debate was limited to "official" politicians. He is a figure of influence in his party, just as Edwards is in his. If your best reasoning for him not being able to take part in a debate is that he is a frequent guest on a cable channel that you do not happen to like, then you might want to do some brushing up before entering *your* next debate...because that's not particularly logically sound. Anyway, even if he isn't actively seeking office, he definitely fits the definition of a politician (see your favorite dictionary for an explanation).

Why is Karl Rove debating anyone?? He's not a politician, he's a frequent "guest" on FixedNews.
