I’ve adored that essay ever since I first read it. I liked it better than Cryptonomicon, actually. It’s a real masterpiece of essay writing, as good as vintage New Yorker pieces by John McPhee. I’m glad you recced it!

Read this a long time ago. It’s a great article, and I highly recommend it.

The only downside it that it was researched a little bit before the big boom in laying fiber/cable. So some of the history and background information is outdated.
