The Dark Knight comes out at midnight tonight, so in honor of the movie, here’s a quiz about knights. It’s become a tradition for entertainers, sports stars and other celebrities to be knighted by the Queen. We’ve compiled 12 names; can you identify the knights and dames?

Note: Even if they have been honored by the Queen, they may not have been knighted. We’re only looking for those higher than a CBE.

Take the quiz.

  1. I know my knights! (but not my days! ;-) )

  2. I was under the impression that people who are not British could not be knighted. There is a designation, but they were not tecnically knighted and could not be called “Sir”. Good subject for a MentalFloss post!

  3. @bzzyb I totally agree with you, and got half of them wrong because they weren’t British nationals. I too, would love to see a m_f post on the topic of knighthood!

  4. could someone please tell me why these people where knighted?

  5. I agree. There are several British orders that the queen gives. But you have to be a British citizen (and swear an oath to the crown) to be officially a knight or a dame.

Also, I got the Robert Mugabe of Nigeria question wrong because I knew that Mugabe had been knighted (Nigeria is a former British commonwealth) but I forgot that he was stripped of the title.
