I was really excited that this story was about the original Mickey Mouse Club instead of the remakes. I lived for that show (including demanding my mother turn it on at all hours of the day-no VCRs then). I'll have to check on the Spin & Marty DVDs, and also the "gold dubloons and peices of eight" series I remember. Thanks WizardBoy, and by the way, I just included the duck-and-cover drills in a paper I was writing a couple of weeks ago. You're right, the Cold War era wasn't necessarily a carefree happy time.

If what Dopey66 says is true, Michael Eisner should be flogged....figuratively if not in actual fact. Seriously, how low can you go?

And concerning Annette — she was 'thrust' upon us in a way that Darlene, Doreen, and the others weren't. Disney recognized what he had with Ms. Funicello (even if no one could say specifically what it was) and used her in films and recordings throughout the '50s and '60s, as well as further keeping her in the spotlight through books, dolls, games, etc.

Beauty alone only goes so far. A great personality is forever. Annette was and still is a very beautiful lady. She also had a great TV and movie presence and a great personality. I don't think Hollywood ever went to her head. That's why even today she still is many of us 50's guys sweetheart. God bless her forever.

"I wish more women would understand that in social situations a warm smile and engaging use of eye contact is much more important than anything else.”

Yeah, right. It was her boobs. I could have cared less about her smile.

It was those breasts. I remember them so well. They were everything to a third grader (me).

Walt Disney gave each of the original Mouseketeers a life-time pass to Disneyland. The first thing Michael Eisner did when he took over, was to revoke those passes.

Not a fan of Annette or Doreen or any of the girls. But even when I was a pre-teen (born 1948), I LOVED all of the guys on MMC and especially the "Spin and Marty" segments. For any fans, there are available 2 DVDs of S&M (ha!) which also contain some early MMC scenes. In 1956-57-58 I didn't even know why (I was 10 for gosh sakes!) but loved to see the boys dance! Thanks for a reminder of those "good ol' days".

[By the way, they weren't so "good" back then -- we had to "duck and cover" under our desks every week to practice in case there was a nuclear war! Not such an "uncomplicated time" as I recall.]

One thing you didn't mention about Annette was she had to tape her breasts. The boys were noticing!

Not to mention her MS.

I grew up in an italian neighborhood. North hill in Akron Ohio. My first crush was a cute little italian girl living next door. Annette reminded me so much of her.

I think Anette got farther as she stayed loyal to Disney, and he had pull. She wore one piece suits in deference to Walt. He told her she had an image to uphold, or is that just an Urban Myth?
