I find it interesting that the Amazon cultures and Indonesian cultures would have similar suspended burials. I wonder if there is a link amongst them.

Great article. Brings back some memories I haven't had in a long time.

Claire, I think the twin thing is the fear of the unknown. I think those people believe very much in their gods and that they're actions influence what happens to them.

I tried to put a non-scientific mind on when you asked that question and I think it might be the fear of the unknown. Two kids coming out looking exactly the same could be terrifying or even the work of a "demon" or their equivalent. Since there's no way to figure out which one is the demon, both have to go. Just so you know, I in no way believe this, I'm just trying to reason it out because I think it's awful as well.

It seems to me disrespectful to bury children in a river as polluted and disgusting as the ones surrounding Delhi. It may be an old tradition but the meaning is lost when dogs come and dig up the bodies. but then maybe i just don't understand, not being from that culture.

also why are twins and triplets bad luck/curses/etc in so many cultures? Some societies in Africa used to kill twins for similar reasons as the Amazon tribes. As a twin myself i tend to take offense. I'd like to know what that's all about.

Oh no, Ransom! After the excerpt from the Times I could barely continue. Well written, but difficult to read.
