Grenoble (Winter '68) uses the Olympic Village as student housing too, I believe.

They converted part of the 1976 Montreal Olympic park into a biodome- complete with tropical rain forest and penguins. It's pretty cool, and there's this big leaning tower you can take a tram up to as well.

Munich actually uses the old village as student/low-rent family housing and the practice fields are now the University sports facilities. They use the grounds for a lot of things including an aquarium and events like medieval fairs. The major stadium is rarely used...

Atlanta had two large facilities, the Omni arena and Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, that were getting old. They kept them up for the Olympics and also had their replacements in place, Turner Field and Phillips Arena. The Georgia Dome had already been around for a few years. Anyway, after the Olympics, the old buildings were destroyed. And Turner Field had been built with the intention of removing the top seats after the Olympics. So, basically, ACOG did plan some things rights! I think the tennis and equestrian centers were big busts after the Olympics, though. Unless they have been rejuvenated in the past couple years.

Interesting post! My wife and I visited the Munich Olympic Park last year. Neat place to visit, despite the tragic backstory. The architecture there merits attention on its own; everything follows a sort of circus-tent motif. The observation tower is pretty cool, too. Click on my name for a link to the Wikipedia article.

The '68 Olympics were held in Mexico City, and I must say that most of the olympic facilities are still in use and in fair conditions, most notably the Olympic stadium, where even some matches of the World Cup were held in 1986. This happened because most of the facilities were assigned to the National University (UNAM) after the Olympics. So, the transition to a public, regulated use was easier and more logical.

What a shame. All that money is poured into these venues. SOMETHING should be done with them.
