Great post, Ransom. The only thing I would mention was that he only quit Asylum after they absolutely refused to release Swordfishtrombones, saying it was too weird.

I love Tom Waits! Great informative article. I found him through Swordfishtrombones and have travelled both forwards and backwards through his career; I must say I prefer his mid to late period stuff to the early lounge lizard type stuff. You guys never cease to amaze me.

Ransom, I always love your posts and this one is no exception. Though Waits’ musical journey is well known to die hards, it is always great to see people like you championing his Waitsness to people who still have a Waits-sized hole in their hearts.

I am a huge waits fan, thanks for writing this and maybe getting hime some more fans. It is weird the dual life he’s led. I found him through “Rain Dogs” and loved the strange growling melodys, and after buying 4 or 5 of his successive albums, went in reverse and got “Closing Time”, which is truly a leap from his more modern work. I think he excels at both syles though I’ve yet to find an album where he wasn’t innovative and a pleasure to listen to, although some do shine brighter than others. Always fun to have a drink with Mr. Waits, no matter the album! Check out wikipedia for an extensive listing. I love thier line of: “Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding “like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car.”

there’s a blog post from earlier this week about the RSS feeds – I don’t use RSS feeds, so I didn’t pay much attention, but the jist I got from it was that there’s nothing they could do about it and it somehow related to Google. I know mental_floss has been eliminated from Google, and I think the change in RSS feeds is part of the attempt to get back in the search engine’s results

Why was the RSS feed changed? I glady enjoyed this blog and read almost all of the posts through my RSS reader. Now that I only get a brief snippet of each post, I’m not going to read them anymore. Is there any reason other than profit….other than trying to increase your page views on the blog? Way to screw up a good thing.
