Ranger J -- considering how quickly the surviving twin died after the emergency separation, you're probably right that the state of surgery was inadequate to the challenge. At that point, infection was still a massive risk, and seldom did anybody want to embark on a surgery in a person who would live without it.

Steve -- Johnny Eck's trick has indeed been duplicated, with the assistance of a woman who was born with the same defect. This woman also appeared on the Discovery Health channel, profiling her pregnancy, which was very high risk because of her physical condition -- lacking a normal pelvis is a serious problem for pregnancy. But it worked out in the end, and she's a mom now. Her baby is normal -- I don't think the condition is heritable (given that Johnny Eck's identical twin didn't have it).

Hmmm...just wondering why they wouldn't of tried to separate the conjointed twins earlier if they were only connected through their buttocks. Maybe surgery wasn't so advanced back then.

Look for a youtube video called "amazing magic trick" for something similar (I assume) to the "half man" trick that Johnny Eck did.

Link is in my name.

If you've never seen Freaks (1932, directed by Tod Browning, and available on DVD), I recommend it. They used actual circus freaks in the show. There is a man with no arms and no legs who lights his cigarette without help.
