What Color Blindness Looks Like
by Mangesh Hattikudur - July 25, 2008 - 5:30 AM

Picture 82.pngThis may be old news to you by now, but the design blog Colourlovers has a fascinating post on what the world looks like to the color blind. From famous logos (above) to art work (below), to distinguishing between the different types of color blindness, it’ll make those of you who get the world in full Technicolor more appreciative of your eyesight. Lots more here. Thanks Mu!

  1. thats pretty ludicrous because it assumes that color blind people just confuse red & green, when in fact there are varying degrees and varying shades of colorblindness.

  2. i don’t get it. i am colorblind (0/6 on the ishihara test) but i can still tell the difference. any ideas as to why?

  3. Color blind here too. Some shades of red look like brown to me. Some shades of green look gold and vice-versa.

  4. Ian: I imagine that is b/c there *is* a difference between them. But my guess would be that what you see on the left is most similar to what a non-colorblind person would see on the right. You would maybe see another shade or have a different impression of the contrast between the two… just my guess.

Noah: “to distinguishing between the different types of color blindness” it says it right there that they recognize there are different degrees and types of colorblindness…

  5. Sheldon – being color blind does not mean that you will not see a difference between them. There are varying degrees of color blindness (color sensitivity) and varying types of color blindness (which colors are affected).

This site is probably more useful to people who are not color blind, in that they can now relate better to what is seen by those who are.

  6. To me they look exactly the same. No difference at all so it must be have been made for red-green colourblind people as that is what I have. There are other kinds of colourblindness which is why other colourblind people see different things.

  7. Wow… This is amazing. I feel so bad for colorblind people… I wish they could get a chance to see how people that aren’t colorblind see.

  8. I am colorblind, I don’t see ANY difference in the 2 photos… I am red-green color blind. I am guessing the 2nd one is the “colorblind” one. By the way… If you have colorblindness from a accident of some type you can be cured… If you got it from your genes it can’t be. It isn’t ALL bad…
