Great Post, Its fascinating hearing some of the back stories to these images. I have recently started my own series which is visual inspired by Arbus' use of the 6x6 format. The work can be seen at Commutographer.blogspot.com

You know, I have an identical twin; I only wish my mother would have dressed us in such fantastic matching dresses. Alas--it was powder-pink and -yellow gingham jumpsuits for us.

Eddie Carmel wasn't really 8'9" as Ringling Brothers billed him. He was actually closer to 7'7", memorable picture though. I seem to remember a similar one of Robert Wadlow who was an amazing 8'11".

Very informative, I didn't realize there were such interesting stories behind the pictures. I have read Andre the Giant's story. He had a very difficult life, I imagine Eddie Carmel did as well.
