Living in New Zealand, we have to prepare for a variety of things: earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, zombies. (Ok, threw that last one in for my husband!)

We have prepared a ‘paranoid’ survival kit that will allow us to live ‘in the bush’ if need-be, similar to Anton’s kit.

Paranoia or not, I do have a collection of various items (crank-powered radio/flashlight, basic first aid materials, one of the aforementioned ‘multi-tools,’ pet supplies, etc.) that I keep in a rolling toolbox in our hall closet. You never know when you might have to grab and go ~ our neighborhood was hit by a severe tornado just a few weeks before we moved there, and we’re also uncomfortably close to the long-slumbering New Madrid fault system. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I’m sure my research for my master’s degree (on the historical development of civil defense) warped me psychologically.

I have extra batteries for my maglite and a set of screwdrivers and I know (in theory) several ways of building a fire and cooking over it. On the other hand, I have several skills that will always be in demand – typing, cooking, a willingness to schlep stuff for pay, etc. – so I’m more prepared for an economic disaster than a natural (or unnatural) one.
