I feel sorry for Natalie West, just because Roseanne's husband and his (onscreen)love interest Nancy joined the show she gets taken out of the opening credits and moved to
“recurring character” status.
So unfair......(I Liked Her Character Crystal Anderson...)

I'm one of the lucky ones -- I watched Roseanne's first five fabulous seasons and then stopped, so my memories of the show are how brilliantly it portrayed a real family and how absolutely funny it was. I stopped watching because every good series eventually begins repeating itself and pulls a "jump the shark" moment -- and it was obvious that Roseanne Barr Arnold Roseanne was heading it that direction. I don't stick around for those episodes, and was glad I missed the finale.

I was (and still am) a HUGE fan of the show. It was more like the weird, real, dyfunctional world most of us grew up in, unlike Silver Spoons or some of those others. (Telpher totally nailed the appeal) but I am with David in the fact that the last season was just her way of not giving a crap anymore about a show that ran it's course. I was a devoted fan (the ganja in the bathtub scene is one of my all time favorites!) because I too, am a terminal smartass and I loved Roseanne and Dan's way of dealing with problems with humor. But I was really saddened by the last season and thought what the !%$!@? happened here?

Lecy Goranson is reading tarot cards at the Gowanus Yacht Club? What's that all about? Bizarre.

It's clear that Roseanne didn't give a crap about the last season. She could have had serious stories about Dan leaving her, or Dan dying from a heart attack. But she coasted through the last season just to get a paycheck, totally betraying her fans.

Thanks for the behind the scenes info :o)

After spending 4am-5am watching Roseanne the past few nights, I have to say it really is one of the greats. It just hits hard sometimes, and the actors never seem disingenuous.

Good article!

wait, Roseanne's surgeon accidentally left a SCALPEL in her FACE?! how could someone miss that?!

The last season was definitely weird. I remember one episode where the two women from Absolutely Fabulous were on the show(I had NO clue why those two were on the show until now. I only remember them as Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker from James and the Giant Peach), that the plot had something to do with Darlene's baby being the Devil's child and those two were witches...or something. It got a little trippy at times lol.

Roseanne, the character, always kind of reminded me of my mom (she'd probably be a little confused if I told her this but oh well). Maybe it had something to do with the hair. The final episode was a let down, but the show, overall, seemed real to me. A lot more realistic than a bunch of marginally employed New Yorkers living in huge apartments in Manhattan.

I agree that the last episode was crap, but the show, as whole was brilliant, and still stands the test of time. The family dynamic on that show was the closest television has ever come to showing what real families look like: angry, dysfunctional, petty but, ultimately, loyal in a pinch. The kids were all funny looking. The parents were fat. The aunt is a confused, promiscuous loser. The grandmother is a crackpot. It's the anti-Cosby, and I love it.

I never watched a single episode of Roseanne and I still don't feel like I missed a thing. I did not/do not get her appeal at all.

Again, an interesting article.

I always felt that that final episode (rather than the final season) cheapened the entire series. It's feels like revisionism to make the show fit more with Rosanne's desire. To change everything in the show though just feels like a betrayal.

I liked the fact they changed actresses (and like Sarah Chalke more as an actress) then they poked fun about it.

However the final episode just was "I've lied to you all these years" and invalidated everything that the show was about.
