I thought the use of “witch hunt” in the Kazan story to be misplaced. Since it can be described as “frantic persecution of perceived enemies,” the fact that Kazan provided names of ACTUAL enemies takes away any “witch hunt” metaphor.

We know that, thanks to decrypted Soviet cables, there were hundreds of communists in the US government and sending information to the Soviets.

as much as we can revile elia kazan for what he did, can we really blame him for falling under so much societal and governmental pressure? i would hope that i could stand firm on my convictions, but who can really say? the government should be shamed much more than he.
