The whole reason that Hitler only got off the one sentence in the opening ceremony is that it is the only sentence that the head of state for the host nation is allowed to say. This prevents any long-winded politician from trying to hijack the opening ceremony and use it for a political platform.

"The flag dips to no earthly King." I think this might have a little more significance then simply forgetting to put up the American flag at the London Olympics.

I've totally mentioned this guy on here before, can't remember when, but if you're going to mention the Paralympics, Mark Wellman's lighting of the 1996 torch in Atlanta was powerful and moving. I was lucky enough to be there, and we all held our breath as he climbed up to the torch and lit it. The dude is a paraplegic climber, and he was such a great representative for the Paralympics. I've never found video, but I would love to relive those moments! What a bad-ass!

In the pigeon-burning video, the first athlete with the torch is TOTALLY frolicking around the stadium. There's no other word for it. It's kind of cute, considering he looks like he's in his 70's.

I was 11 for the Barcelona Olympics and I must say, that torch lighting set the bar high and it hasn't quite been met yet.

I remember the arrow and it was impressive. I also remember four years later in Atlanta when Ali set ablaze that hot dog looking thing which eerily creeped its way up a wire to light the Olympic Cauldron. To say it was "not quite as impressive" would be an understatement.

I wonder what the Chinese will do. Maybe they'll blast the Olympic flame out of a People's Liberation Army tank. Though no matter what they do, I'm sure NBC will be there to tell me how impressed I should be.
