Zach: I considered that, but Andy is exactly right. I grew up in the foothills of the Appalachians, so I knew all about the original beverage known as “mountain dew.”
In fact, when Pepsi first came out with the soft drink by that name, they advertised it with a mountain man drinking out of a jug with “XXX” on the side. There’s also an old country song called “Mountain Dew,” which is about the booze rather than the soft drink.
I also remember there was a bit of a backlash in the south because of the Mountain Dew soft drink and other similar beverages that weren’t alcoholic but HINTED at being alcoholic, like Apple Beer (which was really just an apple-flavored ginger-ale type drink). Some parents felt that it inspired youngsters to want to drink the hard stuff.
Sandy I have a great idea for a brain game for you. It just hit me today and I think that it rocks and it takes a good amount of thinking. Email me if you want in.
In all fairness, the word mountain sould be capitalized.

Zach: not necessarily. The soda is named after a pre-existing slang term for moonshine.

… It’s amazing how much EASIER the puzzle is when you have the right answers to help you figure out the rest.
In other words, I was stuck after I had 1(across) “SAW” and 3(down) “WIZ”
I would have been stuck for a very, very long time…
SAW
SKI
Z
… and I don’t know too many words that start with SS!
