The Most Popular Sailboat Names

Our friend Noah Brier pointed us toward this list of the most popular sailboat names, which he found on 10000BoatNames.com. I’m not sure how official these rankings are, but we were both surprised to see Mental Floss among the leaders—one might be in a lake near you.

We’re prepared to offer one (1) free mental_floss t-shirt to the first (1st) person who emails us a photo of a boat named Mental Floss. While it would be really cool to have our own boat/office, having the photo evidence to pretend we have our own boat/office is the next best thing.

UPDATE: That was quick. Readers Lisa and Barry have emailed a link to Mental Floss Fishing. I’ll be in touch about your shirts. We’ll also award one (1) shirt to the first person who sees a boat named Mental Floss in person, takes a photo, and sends it in.

  2. You are correct. But since I was pretty vague in asking for “a photo of a boat named Mental Floss,” I feel obligated to accept the submission. We’ve also gotten some very nice Photoshop jobs. I forgot to say “no Photoshop jobs.”

    Maybe someone can Photoshop the staff onto the boat.

  5. I have to say… the boat pictured really looks doctored to me. There are areas above the “e” and below the “fl” that look brushed out. Just my opinion.

  8. That’s hilarious that “TBD” is such a popular name amongst boatowners. I wonder how many thought they were the first and thought it was the cleverest thing in the whole wide world…

  10. my parents are avid yachters, & i’ve been all over the east coast with them on trips & seen multiples of all the names listed above – with the exception of Mental Floss. I’ve never seen a boat named that!

    oh, & their current boat is “Slip Away.” I always thought that was a cute name.

  11. No surprise to me to see “Mental Floss” on the list. Along with “Banana Wind”, it’s a Jimmy Buffet song. Sailors make up a large percentage of Buffet fans.

    As an aside, I always heard it was terribly bad luck to duplicate a boat name. Maybe it only applies to duplicating names of one’s own boats.

  13. MoonDance amuses me because I mentally made the jump to the skeevy guys out there who are smarming it up in bars with the pickup line, “It’s a marvelous night for a MoonDance, isn’t it?”
