My parents have a boat named “Ching-ching” (think the sound of wine glasses clinking together). They new they were going to get a bigger boat, so their first was just “Ching”

I knew it was bad luck to rename a boat, but I didn’t know about the duplicate name superstition. Good to know!

Apparently seven other people had the same idea I have had for years:

If I were to ever own a boat, I would want to name it “After You” so I could go impress all the girls when I tell them they have to go sailing with me because “I named the boat after you…”

My all time favorite boat name was my aunt and uncle’s boat – - they were both recently retired teachers and named their boat “Truancy”

Agreed, Caroline. And when AllisonW mentioned it was bad luck to duplicate a boat name I immediately thought, in Tom Hanks’ Forrest voice, “We have 12 ‘Jenny’s.”

No surprise to me to see “Mental Floss” on the list. Along with “Banana Wind”, it’s a Jimmy Buffet song. Sailors make up a large percentage of Buffet fans.

As an aside, I always heard it was terribly bad luck to duplicate a boat name. Maybe it only applies to duplicating names of one’s own boats.

my parents are avid yachters, & i’ve been all over the east coast with them on trips & seen multiples of all the names listed above – with the exception of Mental Floss. I’ve never seen a boat named that!

oh, & their current boat is “Slip Away.” I always thought that was a cute name.
