Two things:

1. To allude to the very first comment in this thread, not only were the Spartans major slaveholders, Persia was one of the only major states of the ancient world to have outlawed slavery. It was against their religion.

2. Speaking of religion, King Xerxes was, like many of his subjects, an adherent of Zoroastrianism, believed to be the world's first monotheistic religion. As such, while Xerxes was certainly an important figure in the clergy (this was also the state religion), he certainly did not consider himself to be a god.

The best thing about the movie 300 is the rifftrax that was created for it. It takes about 5 minutes to really get going, but once it did I could barely breathe. Check out rifftrax.com to see what I'm talking about. So great. The one for Twilight is spectacular. I know Twilight is an epic literature failure, that's why it is so great to listen to these guys make fun of it. They're the same guys that did Mystery Science Theater 3000. Granted, it isn't for everyone.

The biggest thing the movie didn't say is that the biggest part of the battle was the naval battle off the coast. Had the Spartan general lost the sea battle, the ground troops would've been surrounded in a day. The Spartans were also outnumbered in the sea battle and also funneled them through a channel less than a mile wide (i think.)

Steven Pressfield's "The Gates of Fire" is a great read. Australians fought in Greece as part of the Commonwealth forces to try to delay German advances toward the Russian front. They should have been used to attack the weakened Rommel in North Africa after the German's failed to take Tobruk after 9 months. Enjoy Peter Fitzsimon's "Tobruk" for a great read

You are clearly interested in being the facts. You should, therefore, understand the difference between "quote" and "quotation". Look it up.

There is that line he uses about "boy lovers" when referring to Athenians. It is true that older Spartan warriors were paired with the young in an... interesting relationship. But there are other notable parts of Spartan culture that contained homoerotic aspects. For instance, on a Spartan man's wedding night, his wife had her hair cut like a man's, wore a man's shirt, and no pants. The groom proceeded to walk in, have sex with her, leave, and then go sleep in a room full of men. One reason is that "love" was seen as bad (literally as a sickness or a spell cast on them - I shit you not - there are cursetablets about it, you can look them up). And as for the gay sex all the time, their view was more-less, "What's more manly than having sex with a man?" Read about Lycurgus' laws and you will see just how odd Spartans were.

Why would the movie 300 tell us any of this? This stuff has nothing to do with the movie or wouldn't it be necessary to know while watching. You sound like you think the movie is ripping us by not telling us the truth, when, in reality, if we wanted to know the truth, we would have listened in history class, and also it is based on actual events, not a history lesson.
