Fairy tales and fables have been around for centuries, but do you remember who wrote which tale? See if you can guess the author of some of the most popular fairy tales and fables ever created. For each story, pick the correct author(s): Hans Christian Andersen, The Brothers Grimm, or Aesop.
Take the Quiz: Once Upon a Time?
Then come back and let us know how you did, and check out Stacy’s “8 Fairy Tales & Their Not-So-Happy Endings” from last December.
When I was little, my father would read a story to my brother and I every night, from what we called “The Blue Book.” Every date of the year had a different story, and my birthday (February 1) was The Princess and the Pea. Great memories!

100%, although I thought some stories predated Anderson and Grimm -especially Cinderella, which originated in China (land of the small foot fetish). If the story has a moral, its Aesop. If it has a happy ending, its Anderson. If it’s dreadfully scary, it’s Grimm.

100% I knew that M.A. in children’s literature would be worth something. Yes – I’m the same person who said that for the recent Shakespeare quiz. Can you say Student Loans everyone?

I had the Little Mermaid story (the real one) and I never really listened too it because I loved the illustrations so much. When I got older and figured out the story I was kind of sad, but it started my lifelong obsession with fairy tales- I had all the Grimm stories too, and I was almost always the first one to pipe up in several classes if we got on the subject of disney movies with “That’s not the real thing, you know..” Yeah..English majors rock.

87%. Not terrible. At least I know more about the stories I suppose. . . it’s always fun to see what people think about the real (not Disney) endings of fairy tales.

I loved this quiz! I honestly didn’t do too well, but I got all the answers right for the Brothers Grimm.
Did you know Repunzal wouldn’t have been cast out of the castle had she not said “Grandmother, why are my clothes getting tighter?”
That prince kept coming to visit her, get it? But that was changed because it was too taboo for children.
I think there was another one about her asking “Why are you so much heavier to pull up than the prince?” too.

I must have been getting “The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs” confused with “The Golden Goose” by the Grimms.
I think I remember it now though. Does he get impatient and chop open the goose expecting to find more gold inside?

Nerak’s results are EXACTLY the same as mine.
freaky, and all thanks to a “Hans Christian Andersen” story collection.

Where does one get a MA in Children’s Lit?
I’d love to add that to my MLIS…

93% I flubbed the Goose one.
That blue book – Andrew Lang’s The Blue Fairy Book. Lang collected fairy tales, the basic ones are in the Red and Blue, but I’ve actually read the Vermilion and Chartreuse… really wierd, religious allegory stuff… but Fairy Tales are awesome.
Did you all know that the original Sleeping Beauty features rape and cannibalism? Take that, Disney!
