Great post about the Watts Towers, another example of great public folk art everyone should look into would be both The Orange Show and the Beer Can House, both in Houston, TX.

My mother lived next door to Simon & the Watts Towers. She would watch him working on them after he would come home from work. She said he would pick up things he found on the way home, including pieces of glass to use for decorating the Towers. When my oldest brother was born in 1945, she had Simon take a picture of her holding her new baby next to the Towers! She is 83 yrs. old & still reminisces about it!

Wow, never knew the history of those famous Watts towers. Watts is only a few cities away from me, it is pretty scary going in that area, not to mention the streets are a maze and you can find yourself going round and round and not getting out and getting ugly and intimidating looks from them gangstas and seeing cops every other block. Ill have to make sure to go check those towers out up close, of course accompanied by a couple big guys and some maize. :)~

Thanks, badgerbruin! In all honesty, I was going to do a list of such projects, but when I started researching the first one, the story was so involved that I made a whole post of it. I'll gladly add your suggestion to my working list!

Miss C - Great post! For another example of folk art mastery, look up Fred Smith's Concrete Park in Phillips, WI. Also very interesting.

Miss C - Great post! For another example of single-handed folk art mastery, look up Fred Smith's Concrete Park in Phillips, WI. It would also make an interesting post.
