I don't mean to be a nattering nabob of negativity, but Spiro Agnew was not bland. He provided much entertainment for us in the seventies. Aside from his overblown vocabulary, his best act was his early departure from office, resulting from his "interest" in construction projects back in Maryland. This was particularly sweet after he had lambasted my generation on TV during a discussion with a panel of university student body presidents.

The problem conservatives face with McCain is that he's already demonstrated that, outside the war, he is NOT conservative, so a moderate/liberal Republican (or even independent/liberal Joe Lieberman) would NOT be a difference-maker for the GOP base. In 1980, GHWB moderated Reagan for the NE establishment; in 2008, McCain satisfies the establishment but needs a more conservative running mate to satisfy the base. Otherwise, if he keeps tacking left, the conservatives will be without a party and McCain will have to stretch mighty hard to beat Obama.

My dad was a Goldwater Republican. I remember how pissed he was when Reagan named Bush his VP. He was throwing stuff at the TV. I guess he came around, though. I know he didn't vote for Dukakis in '88.
