I heard #2 couldn't get up not because it would be rude, but because he was an alcoholic and was in a drinking competition. Getting up meant he would lose and he just couldn't bear to loose.

A few sidebars on the Jim Creighton story -

1) Apparently during the swing in which he ruptured something (most accounts say bladder), he hit a home run

2) When it occurred, he heard a snap and thought he had torn his belt

3) Legend has it that he was such an amazing hitter that he once went an entire season without making an out - keep in mind that this was 19th century baseball and the rules were different.

4) As the first real baseball star, when he was buried in Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery his tombstone was capped with a marble baseball which has since been worn away by the elements

Composer/conductor Jean-Baptiste Lully died of a bad downbeat. He was beating time with a large staff when he gave an especially vigorous gesture and nailed his big toe. The injury became infected, the foot developed gangrene, and Lully refused to have the limb amputated, leading to his death.

1) I can't imagine PURPOSELY choking on a bottlecap as a method of committing suicide. Seems much too unreliable.

2) Isadora Duncan's supposed last words were, "Je me lance vers la gloire" ("I am off to glory"). This became a refrain in the Talking Heads song "Psycho Killer." Damn, I always wondered exactly what that phrase was! Thanks, Wikipedia!

3) Lastly, I once related those last words to my delightfully mordant husband. He countered that considering that she strangled, her last words were probably more along the lines of -- and then he made a series of gargling, choking noises. Thus, she became one of my favorite jokes; plus, he's probably right.
