Gibraltar is a peninsula (Europa Point) not an island. The Rock is connected to the rest of the Iberian peninsula by a narrow sand on which the road runs. The airport runs across the road and is built out into the bay on fill, which means that land traffic has to stop for the air traffic. During periods of bad relations the air traffic had to start turning as soon as their wheels were up in order to avoid violating Spain’s airspace, glad I arrived by ship. BTW the caves under the Rock are rumored to go all the way to Africa under the Strait.

I think the concept of ‘myth’ is not very accurate. Polynesian culture is alive and well in the islands. To consider the belief of these people to be myth is to deny the culture altogether. I lived on Oahu for 5 yrs. and it was one of the most meaningful spiritual experiences in my life as a Pagan. I wish I could go back. A huge part of my heart will always belong to Hawaii.

Hawaii is another state working for independence. I have a friend who is part of that movement, who says that when native Hawaiian’s talked to Pacific command about their situation, they were told that the US Navy would be obligated to protect Hawaii from the US if a battle ever broke out about independence.

How could you leave out the Conch Republic?

The Florida Keys declared their independence after some sort of inspection site was set up for people returning to the mainland. The reasoned that if people had to go thru customs, then they must be another country – the Conch Republic.

what no mention of the Conch republic- we succeeded where others failed. independent for less than a day and yet the florida keys demanded money for assistance.

KW – I can’t tell you the number of times I have heard someone say (read with Texas drawl) “ya know, Texas is the only state that can legally secede cause we were a country before we joined the U.S.” Most Texans I know have some major state pride.

I just Googled Sealand and it seems like a fire destroyed a good portion of it in 2006. :-(
