Senator John McCain just named Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. I’ll admit we didn’t have a “Fun Facts About Sarah Palin” column on the ready (though we hear her nickname was “Sarah Barracuda” and she was a scrappy high school point guard on the 1982 Wasilla Warriors state championship team), so our contribution to the VP media circus will have to come from our archives. Here are five VP stories/quizzes we’ve run in the past:
1. Our Scandalous Vice Presidents: 10 Memorable Backup Plans
*
2. The Conservatives Hated Bush 41 (and 7 Other Reactions to VP Choices)
*
3. Al Gore’s Messy Office
*
4. Name the Last 10 Vice Presidents
*
5. Name the Last 10 Vice Presidential Losers
And if we have any readers in Alaska who want to weigh in with fun facts about Sarah Palin, go for it.
I think it’s interesting that she’s hot.

She was a beauty queen, Miss Congeniality quite the opposite of McCain.

Right after the announcement, they posted her photo on CNN. I mentioned to one of my coworkers that she resembles Tina Fey – maybe Fey can make a few appearances on Weekend Update again!

We should try to remember that this was the woman who previously commented that “I’m not even sure what a VP does…”

How about that she’s a Creationist?

Constitutionally, the vice president has two roles: presiding over the Senate (and thus breaking tie-votes if necessary) and being the first replacement if a president dies, resigns, or is removed from office.
Beyond those roles, nobody really knows what a VP should do. Various vice presidents in the past forty years have assumed executive or ambassadorial roles but whether these are appropriate or even constitutional is a matter of debate.

Lifetime member of the NRA, anti-choice, anti-gay, supports the teaching of creationism …
What a charmer …

Alice, you and others may discredit her, but she not only preaches but lives her values. For example, she is pro-life, and recently gave birth to her fifth child knowing he would be born with Down Syndrome. I always give credit to people who practice what they preach, even if I don’t agree with what they’re sayin’!

She has every right to do whatever she likes in her own life. However, she wants to tell the rest of us that we aren’t entitled to a choice. That’s my problem. I think it’s great when people live their values. We should ALL be able to do so.

My first thought on Sarah was that McCain just drove a stake throught the heart of his strategy to discredit Obama on inexperience. And I think everybody is scared ****** that she would be a heartbeat from the presidency. Maybe I am wrong since the polls are already split on her as the vp pick.

I think he’s throwing the race. Everyone knows he’s not going to win and none of the big boys are willing to take the fall.

Sorry Alice but that is so overblown. Considering Obama is best buds with a domestic terrorist, the state trooper issue is a non-starter.
It’s funny… I’d describe her as the most “pro-choice” candidate in the race. Her statements and her record seem to favorite a right to choose when it comes to guns, gay rights, school choice, etc. Like most who don’t extend that “choice” to abortion, it’s because she views it as murder. It’s analogous to the issue of honor killings in the Islamic world: most of us in the West believe it’s murder while the view of a rather substantial number of people on the other side of the planet think it’s just a way to correct a ‘mistake’.

She certainly doesn’t view the death penalty as murder. But, there are many of us that view the killing of an adult, no matter the reason, to be murder.
I personally have no issues with a well regulated militia having guns. We have a wonderful Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and terrific Police forces. I consider those to be the finest in the world.
I have no issue with people chosing to home school. What business is it of mine if someone wants to make their child a social cripple.
As for homosexuals, I didn’t realise she was for gay marriage or civil unions? Oh right! She isn’t.
How again is Obama best buds with a terrorist? Do you have proof of that? Or are you just spouting more right wing nonsense?

She was for the “Bridge to Nowhere” before she was against it.
