Ha ha, I got all the way in before I realized that I have been here before! I was in the Navy and it was the one of the final port of calls for the USS Cushing (DD 985)! It really is a beautiful place, but definetly dated!

Bethy: The book Island of the Blue Dolphins was based on San Miguel Island, one of the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara, California … and thus none too close to Nikol’skoye. Right ocean, wrong part of the world!

DOH! Misread….Nikol’skoye is in the Commanders, apart from the Aleutians. I’d still be curious about proximity :)

I know this is months later but followed this link from another post. I’m curious about the Nikol’skoye being in the Aleutians. Anyone remember “Island of the Blue Dolphins” (great book!)I’d be curious about how close/far those two places might be?

If we’re sticking with the island theme, I vote for Vanuatu. It’s the happiest place to live according to some index, the site of one of those survivor shows, and was the site of some WWII cargo cults.

Mr. Lewis? I’m pretty sure people would like to see another entry in your series!

There’s a picture of that linear feature that says it is a trestle over the fur seal rookery for observations.

Whoops, I think there is a minor typo…

55 11’42 N and 156 59’38 east

should be

55 11’42 N and 165 59’38 east

to see Nikol’skoye in all its “splendor”. Also, scan around the island for some really great landmarks…like “cottage”. Seriously.
