I was under the impression that the names of the really bad hurricanes were permanently retired. It made me sad, because as a Camille, I’d never get to see a hurricane named after me. (I was born after hurricane Camille- in fact, we lived in Mobile for a few months when I was very little and people gave my parents flack for naming me Camille.)

I guess being in the Pacific our names are completely different. Pongsona (pronounced bong-so-wa I think) was Guam’s last super Typhoon… and yes it was greater than most of those that hit the east coast. Lucky enough, Guam has suffered many a super typhoon and buildings are built to withstand speeds greater than 200mph. You should check out the extremely weird names of Typoons.

It’s always been my desire to urinate on the grave of the guy responsible for the idea of giving hurricanes names- it’s just too cutesy.

For a while, my mom has wanted a hurricane with her name, “Orlaine”. There’s an “Orlene” due in a few years that’ll have to do.

Really nice post. I just had to comment because my reCAPTCHA was “1919 Weather”. Creepy, because: “Key West was hit by the most powerful hurricane in its history on Sept. 10, 1919. It was the only hurricane to form in the Atlantic that year…”
