The Red Bull Flugtag is a ripoff of the Bognor Birdman Competition and should be rightly observed as such

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bognor_Regis#Birdman_of_Bognor

Red Bull itself is a pick me up drink from Thailand called Krating Daeng (Thai for Red Bull) which Dietrich Mateschitz licensed from the Krating Daeng company here in Thailand and its owner Chaleo Yoovidhya and Mateschitz own 49% each of Red Bull GmbH with the other 2% of the company owned by Chalerm Yoovidhya, Chaleo's son

I actually attended that Flugtag. A good friend of mine was on a team that built a giant "Sparky the Sundevil" (it flew like a rock). In the video, when the announcer mentions the University of Arizona, you can hear all the Arizona State students booing.
There was a major lawsuit afterward because the organizers gave alcohol to under-age competitors, one of whom hit and killed an off-duty police officer while driving home.

Flugtat was held last month here in Tampa. Wow! Lots of fun to watch, I bet even more fun to participate it. The city expected about 40,000 to come out to watch. Over 100,000 did. Hardly unsung, maybe un-mainstream, at least for now.

I'd love to go to any or all of these. But this weekend, it's all about the Vancouver Sausage Fest. (Vancouver, not B.C., Washington, not D.C.)
