RE magazine vs online....

I would be very interested in the magazine but I just do most things online rather than printed so I would love to see a "subscription" area online where I could pay to access articles in the magazine but view them online.

Cereal is possibly my favorite comfort food, this was the perfect article to celebrate my beloved, carb-laden treat. You highlight so many things I never knew about cereal. I LOVE the first paragraph especially - excellent insight! =)

Justin L - A "breakfast carnival" like you describe sounds like a blast! Thanks for mentioning it...

Great post!

I grew up in Battle Creek, MI and so this hits close to home for me (no pun intended). In fact my mom worked in the kellogg's World headquartes for like 12 years, and my grand parents retired as workers form the Post plant.

A particularly flossy tidbit: Every year, Battle Creek hosts the "World's Longest Breakfast Table" which is exactly what it sounds like. All throughout downtown, there are endless amounts of picnic tables lined up and upwards of a few hundred thousand bowls of cereal, donut holes, milk and orange juice items are handed out. Its a BIG deal. kelloggs and Post divvy up the responsibility and each have their own products passed out - its a very festival or carnival like atmosphere.
Oh, did I mention its all FREE!!!

The flossy part is that for a number of years, there was a bit of competition with a city in Mississippi (IIRC) who would do the same with pancakes, and in Battle Creek, one of the local banks would put the "results" of each festival on its reader board to show who had the most patrons to their breakfast. Kinda neat, but for some reason the compettion aspect dies out qute a few years ago.

You can't go anywhere in Battle Creek without some sort of cereal influence. We had a cereal museum (Kellogg's sponsored) for a while, but it was closed ue to lack of interest i believe. You can however tour Dr Kellogg's home, tour the Post and Kelloggs Plants and all sorts of stuff. The Post organization sponsored the building of the local minor leaugue baseball stadium even.

For those that want to know, the smell of burning cereal (as in the screwed up a batch of fruity pebbles or something) is probably the worst smell in the world, and it permeates the city whenever it happens. Ewwww....

Personally, I have even been Tony the Tiger on a number of occasions at the local zoo for various functions.

Thats all for now, I guess.

This was an excellent article -- more like this!!

Sara: You should renew your subscription -- renewing your subscription allows Mental Floss to continue to publish great information on a constant basis. If you stop paying for the magazine, you'll likely have to pay a subscription price for this site or give up the opportunity to be hyper-informed on how it is.

Renew your subscription!

"FYI, this is an example of why I don’t plan to renew my print subscription..."

Sara,

The fact that they publish some of the stories in the magazine and online is not "unfair", it gives people a choice.

You're making it sound like those who get the magazine are being fooled into paying for what they could get for free, but a lot of articles in the magazine dont go onto the website. Some people like to have something physical they can take with them, save, collect, give away etc.

Others like to just read it online, it's all a matter of preference, and unlike many magazines, Mental Floss gives you a choice.

FYI, this is an example of why I don't plan to renew my print subscription the next time it comes due. Why am I paying for content that gets posted on the internet for free? I love the content, that's totally not the issue, it's just not fair to charge people for it and then give it away to everyone.
