With 753 guesses on the books, it’s time to announce the winner of the ‘I’ll Keep The Change, But You Can Count It’ game. I took advantage of the free coin-counting machine at my local Commerce Bank, and learned I had far less change than I’d hoped. (The whole thing about buying a new MacBook battery with my change? I’d better get used to working near an outlet.)

But some of you proved yourself far more able to estimate bulk coinage. The closest bid (without going over) belongs to Carole, who guessed $88.44. Congratulations!

Here’s what she wins:

• One (1) mental_floss t-shirt
• One (1) back issue of mental_floss magazine
• One (1) autographed copy of David Israel’s critically acclaimed novel, Behind Everyman

Mike, Darwin, Renis and Justin all guessed in the low-$88 range, and will each receive a free back issue of the magazine. I’ll be in touch about your prizes.

And if you want to see the coin breakdown (because I know you’re dying to see the coin breakdown), here you are:

Let’s do this again in 12-18 months.

  1. You’re gonna need another jar of coins if you’re still looking to buy a battery.

    Hah! recaptcha = lease power

  2. Ok, fine, but WHO Won the First Ladies Trivia quiz?

Weren’t we promised a winner a few days ago, once you verified the ‘truthiness’ of the entry?

How long could that take? :-)

  3. so would have changed my guesses if I hadn’t gone with the assumption you had enough for a battery plus diapers…
    :p

  4. Can we see a distribution chart of all the guesses people made?

  5. Having rolled so much loose change in my younger days…. I knew there was less than 100.00 there….

  6. Oh my, she got very close. That’s creepy, very creepy.

I didn’t even guess because, back when I was little and on a coin counting craze, I would raid my father’s change drawer for any more that I needed. (Seriously, a drawer; damn thing was filled with so much stuff, it broke three times and, when I did finally get to the bottom of it, I found a MasterCharge card that expired in 1977 – that was in the mid 90′s.)

  7. Wow! If I only guessed $1 more…

    *guessed $87.50*

    Congrats to the winners! :)

  8. damn. lol
at least i do not claim my guesses were anythng more than guesses. lol

  9. Did you do something to the battery? If not it is quite possible you can snag a free battery. A bunch of macbook batteries ended up defective and stopped taking in a charge, so Apple was replacing them for free. I got a free one when mine stopped working, you should try calling them and see if you can still get one.

  10. I missed by less then $1.00 but I went over. I had $89.42. In the immortal words of Maxwell Smart – “missed it by that much.”
