Celluloid-stumper: Paprikash
by David K. Israel - September 21, 2006 - 8:29 AM

sally.jpgToday’s the first day of Autumn [ed. note: actually it's the 23rd! Guess I was just too darn anxious to bid farewell to the heat of summer], which always makes me think of two things: Central Park and jazz standards like “Autumn Leaves,” “Danke Schoen,” or “Autumn in New York.” And what movie brings them all together like When Harry Met Sally?

So in honor of Fall, of “Autumn in New York,” and of Rob Reiner’s classic comedy, I present you with today’s Celluloid-stumper.

Same rules apply as always: first person to get ALL the correct answers first wins bragging rights. No Googling, no IMDB-ing, no Wiki-ing etc. and no popping in an old VHS for help.

Question #1: The famous orgasm scene takes place at which deli in New York City?

Question #2: The deli is on the corner of which two streets?

Question #3: What does the singer who performs “Autumn in New York” on the movie’s soundtrack have in common with the film?

Question #4: Billy Crystal can be seen reading a certain Stephen King novel in the movie. What is the book’s title?

Question #5: This book would go on to have a major impact on one of the filmmakers – how?

Bonus Question: You’ve probably been annoyed by this woman before, who somehow gets through even the best popup blockers. She’s the face of what dot.com?

Bonus Question #2: How does this woman tie in with the character Amanda Reese in our film?

  1. Definitely takes place at Katz Deli on the corner of Houston and Ludlow. Crystal is reading Misery which is Reiner’s next film. The singer is Harry Connick Jr, who went to school in NYC. Ummm, that’s a stretch, but I have no idea what he had in connection with the film. So close…

I think that face is from Classmates.com, but I have no idea how she ties in.

  2. #4 Misery
#5 Rob Reiner directed, produced, or something the movie Misery

And I’m very curious about the answer to the bonus question…

  3. I hate to rain on your parade, but the Autumnal Equinox isn’t until the wee hours of the morning of Saturday the 23rd…

  4. Jesse has it mostly right! There were a number of different correct answers to the Harry Connick Jr question, the most obvious being his name: Harry.

I’ll wait to see if anyone else weighs in with the bonus answers before giving that away, but Jesse is on the right track there, too!

Oh, and Lllje, thanks for the correction. I’ll fix now…

  5. The face is from classmates.com and the tie-in is that Harry’s initial connection with Sally was because he was dating her college classmate Amanda.
    at least I think so…

  6. Ding! Ding! Sarah K with the bonus points!

Now tell us what you really think of that darn popup!

  7. Slightly off topic but you reminded me. With the coming of the Equinox we have a EGG celent opportunity. On the 23rd. one can put an egg on its “bottom” and it will stand up. The explination has something to do with gravity.

  8. Didn’t Myth Busters prove that you could alwasy stand an egg on its “bottom,” Equinox or not?

  9. The girl in that Classmates photo graduated with me from Fitzgerald High School in 19mumblemumble. She worked for Classmates.com for a while; all the photos they use in their ads are of employees or members of employees’ families.

  10. Kara: amazing piece of trivia! Thanks. I love her photo, I just wish she’d stop popping up all the time on my monitor.

  11. Bonus question #2
This probably has nothing to do with the correct answer but doesn’t that woman have an uncanny resemblance to Dustin Hoffman?

  12. Jarred takes the prize for funniest comment, not only on this post, but the posture comment on Ransom’s post this morning made me laugh out loud, as well.

    Thanks for those!
